The ‘Balla Arat’ candle pays respect to the traditional owners of the Ballarat region, the Wadawurrung people of the Kulin Nation, who have occupied the area for thousands of generations. Balla Arat means resting place, from the Wadawurrung ‘balla’, meaning elbow or reclining on the elbow, and ‘arat’, meaning place. It was renamed Ballarat by Scottish settler Archibald Yuille in 1838.
