One of the first gold seekers to arrive in Ballarat in September 1851, Englishman James Oddie became a key figure in the development of Ballarat as a real estate broker, banker, philanthropist and founder of the Art Gallery of Ballarat. A passionate advocate for the role of art in improving people’s lives, Oddie established the original mandate of the Gallery – Not for self but for all.
